A dual implementation of blown glass, resulting from lengthy and extensive research looking forward to new possibilities of use for an ancient yet also contemporary material.
Gem and Tartan are the two new suspension lamps conceived and developed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba for Foscarini, the third chapter – when the design matures to the production stage - resulting from a journey which the designers embarked upon with Foscarini for Dom, in 1998, and pursued subsequently with Rituals. With the two new models, Gem and Tartan, a further step forward has been taken in the technical experimentation and graphic application to glass, investigating the fascinating expressive possibilities of this surface, marked by lines and rhythms.
“We used the particular crafting technique from the Dom lamp”, the two designers explain, “which entails a singular type of incision that lends the glass uniqueness and three-dimensional appeal. With Foscarini, we have over time developed a special technique for the evolution of the glass surface which industrialises craft-based techniques, to achieve a vibrant emotional impact, a soft light like the one cast by a flame”.
Gem and Tartan are two different high-relief blown glass suspension lamp models.
Tartan stands out for a very rich glass, crossed by vertical and horizontal geometric lines, which design the typical pattern of the namesake fabric in high relief. The diffuser is open downwards, guaranteeing direct light onto the underlying surface, which adds to the suffused light that transpires through the matt glass.
Gem on the other hand is a completely closed sphere, on which the surface movement is achieved in bas-relief through light grooves which design moving criss-crossing waves, creating facets and geometric games that are emphasised by lights and shadows.
